On the use of indigenuos languages in the Catholic church in Benin City...Two months ago I had a meeting with the choir master of my church. I registered my displeasure for the non use of Benin songs during church services. His reply was that the choir sees the use of Benin as old fashioned, just like they do not like to speak Benin to one another. We reasoned together and the services has liven up with the use of Benin songs. Many of the worshipers were feeling intimidated and already thinking that God only understand those languages of those wanabe inter colonialist.
Edo Chiefs Call For The Removal Of The Archbishop Of Benin Catholic Diocese
Benin City –

Crisis rocking the Catholic Church in Edo State took a turn for the worse as Edo chiefs of Bini extraction, led by Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe, on Friday, called for the immediate removal of the Archbishop of Benin Catholic Diocese, Augustine Akubeze

The call, according to Igbe, becomes necessary over the alleged refusal by the Archbishop to conduct mass in the local dialect and his disrespect for the Benin monarch.

A group, Edo Liturgical Group, had last year called on the Catholic Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, to remove Akubeze, who is of Igbo origin. It also demanded use of Bini language in church officiating.

Igbe, in a prepared speech, called on the pope to urgently effect Akubeze’s transfer out from the diocese.

The statement read in part, “We, the Edo people see the archbishop’s appointment as a conquest of the Benin archdiocese and we want our honour restored, we cannot allow a missionary tribal ruler priest to dilute the moral strength of the Church.”

Igbe stated that Catholic priests of Bini origin were being overlooked, while others were imported from Eastern Nigeria.

He said, “We find it unacceptable that the Catholic Church and Augustine Akubeze decided to treat our revered king and our people with such disdain and disrespect. In consideration of all these and the desire to create an enabling environment for honest evangelisation, we have come to the inevitable decision that Akubeze cannot continue to remain as a shepherd of the Catholic Church in Benin.-PUNCH

My response to a renew discussion on the relationship between the Catholics and the people of Benin. ,,,, This discuss here remind me of an encounter in our village immediately after the civil war. An elderly man from our village visited from the city. As he sat down he noticed some children running around, after awhile he ask of a particular boy who was all over the place and been restlessly distracting the other children. He said " I noticed that he is quite different from the rest kids" He is very greedy even at that age, he just want everything for himself. The host replied that is okonkwo, the boy Lucy your junior sister had for Mbakwe. The elderly man laughed and said it is in their blood.

On the plan recall of some Senators in Nigeria senate... ... A recall can be done in a Senators constituent. You will need to collect two-third signatures of the number of registered voters or of the vote that got him in there. The exercise could be very expensive as the concern senator will also put machineries in place to save his skin. Lastly as in all things in Nigeria it might become very bloody if you know what I mean. In all it is worth trying.
